How We Help Ankylosing Spondylitis Patients

We deal with lots of forms of arthritis at Natural Care Chiropractic in Lindenhurst. One form of inflammation that often affects the back, ankylosing spondylitis, requires especially attentive care. How this disease develops is poorly understood, but it is treatable and responds better when people seek help quickly.

Ankylosing Spondylitis

When a person has ankylosing spondylitis, the places where joint capsules, ligaments, and tendons attach to bone are inflamed. The neck, jaw, lower back, and hips are all common places for inflammation to occur. In extreme cases, the bones may grow spurs when inflammation subsides, causing them to fuse together. For this reason, treatments for ankylosing spondylitis revolve around keeping the bones mobile, as well as reducing discomfort.

Physical therapy is essential for maintaining flexibility in ankylosing spondylitis patients. We can also provide advice on posture that will reduce strain on the spine. Other treatments will depend on the specifics of a person’s condition, but may include acupuncture, manual therapy for soft tissues to improve bloodflow, and nutritional counseling to avoid foods that contribute to inflammation.
