Core Strengthening Tips for Injury Prevention

Updated: Sep 9, 2020

When people suffer musculoskeletal injuries, physical therapy is one of the most important aspects of their recovery. But core strengthening exercises are also a preventive measure and an essential way to guard against relapses. The exact workout regimen a patient should follow will vary according to their needs and we at Natural Care Chiropractic in Lindenhurst encourage our patients to request individual counseling. But there are some aspects of core strengthening everybody should be familiar with.

One common misconception is that the core muscles are merely the ones in the abdomen and that the organs are right below them. In fact, there are several layers of abdominal muscles and the tone of the outermost one, the rectus abdominis, doesn’t always tell us much about the strength of the inner layers. The transverse abdominis is the muscle that wraps across the front of our organs, with two layers of oblique muscles between it and the rectus abdominis. The conditions of the pelvic muscles which attach to the lower spine also prevent or contribute to back pain, and the multifidus muscle is one of several that link together the vertebrae.

When core muscles are flexible, patients experience less wear on the cartilage of their back and hip joints. Low impact aerobics are often recommended as a way of strengthening core muscles without putting further strain on spinal discs or joints. Treatments such as spinal adjustments and acupuncture can help patients feel comfortable exercising and our in-office nutritional counseling will enable patients to provide their core muscles with necessary nutrients.
